This week I had some interesting discussions with parents about the power of presence.

The only time you will fully be able to experience life is in the present moment. You are not engaged in time travel to the past, or to the future, you are in the present moment, it’s the only opportunity to fully live. The quality of true presence is an undervalued gift, it offers you the opportunity to learn, to be curious, to let your body lead rather than your mind.

Often when parents contact me it’s to talk about problems their child is having, I always like to take a step back and have a conversation with the parent to see where they are at and how they are showing up in their relationship with their child.

There is a vast difference between physical presence and the quality of your presence. Both are important, however, the latter is where the gold is.

As you go into the weekend notice the quality of your presence with your kids, with your partner, etc. How are YOU showing up?

Have you decided how a conversation will go before you have it? Have you decided what your child’s behaviour will be before it happens? Are you on devices while talking to your kids?

If you answered yes to any of these I encourage you to try something different. When you talk to your kids instead of responding be curious, be a detective, ask what else, tell me more or just listen without responding

We all want to feel like we are being heard, that we matter. The quality of our presence is a great way to show our kids that they are a priority – that they matter. Being in the moment is being fully alive, experiencing life in real-time. What a wonderful gift, reminder, lesson to show and share with your kids.

“The most basic and powerful way to connect to another person is to listen. Just listen. Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention…A loving silence often has far more power to heal and to connect than the most well-intentioned words.” Rachel Naomi Remen

The power of connection should never be assumed nor underestimated. One of the most surprising conversations that came up during our summer workshops with teens was around the issue of connection. The fabulous thing about having open conversations is that we allow others to explore and share. When we give our kids the space to explore and we truly listen we can never predict what we will learn.

What came out of these conversations was nothing short of amazing (and might I say a bit mind-blowing). We were having a discussion about the current situation (the pandemic) and how everyone was feeling. One of the participants raised the issue of connection.

This individual mentioned that at the beginning of the lock-down how their family was doing all sorts of family activities. They had pyjama days, took turns preparing meals, game nights, etc. As time went on, although they were all still in the same household, the activities lessened and all being under the same roof was considered ‘family time’.

As discussions continued other participants agreed that they really enjoyed the feelings of connection they had as a family during the beginning of the lock-down. I did not expect this. Many parents come to me because they feel like their teens are disconnected and here they were talking about how much they loved the close family time.

I asked them if they had shared their feelings with their families and not one had done so. Fascinating!

Perhaps a great dinner table conversation would be to open up the discussion about the beginning of the lock-down and where we are now. How are they feeling? Are there things they learned? Are there changes they would like to see in your family? Ask and then just listen….

Much love.

Two powerful questions raised by teens during workshops. Am I valued and am I capable? When we are willing to explore this and more so to help individuals know their worth magic happens.

“You find your worth within yourself.” Anonymous

We did some fabulous workshops this summer with teens. Through our exploration, two central themes emerged consistently with the workshop participants. When we explored their questions and struggles what emerged were two themes:

Am I valued? and Am I capable?

All participants raised doubts, fears and struggles. It was a respectful and supportive place to explore from an individual and collective space.

These fabulous conversations led to some deep questions and all the participants were open and curious. The connections and energy were amazing. In feedback discussions, they mentioned feeling empowered knowing that they weren’t the only ones struggling with these issues. They were respectful and encouraging of others. They also were super supportive in encouraging others to find their own voice and embrace the things that made them unique.

A common discussion piece that came out of these explorations was the appreciation for having someone who was willing to show up and walk beside them – not in front of them, not telling them what to do but to ask questions to help them discover for themselves.

If you think back to your own childhood, do you remember someone who supported and believed in you? How did it feel? I’ve asked adults this question and most of them still remember that one person who really made a difference for them.

Exploring these issues with the younger generation is such a gift. It helps them build a strong relationship with themselves. Let’s be honest, we all want this for our kids. This wisdom is a gift that will help them build a strong foundation and will help them as they journey through adolescence and into adulthood.

These conversations should be ongoing! We strongly encourage parents and those who are involved with children and teens to embrace a mindset about the power and potential of creating space for them to continue this exploration. It begins with connection, 100% presence and a belief in the power that everyone is unique, capable and valued just as they are.

We encourage you to consider how you can help foster this growth within the children in your life. Start with one simple step, one conversation, one question. Please feel free to share your thoughts, questions, insights. This is a community that will only be as strong as the members of it.

Much love.

“All children have within them the potential to be great kids. It’s our job to create a great world where this potential can flourish.” Stanley Greenspan

Welcome! We are excited to launch our website.

It’s Good To Be Me launched earlier this year as a wellbeing platform for children, teens and parents. Throughout the summer we hosted over 75 children and teens in our virtual workshops. We welcomed participants between 6 and 16 years old. We had a great time and are so grateful to all the beautiful souls who participated. We received fabulous feedback from the participants. We learned so much and are inspired to continue our journey.

Our passion is helping children and teens explore and connect with the true essence of who they are and what makes them amazing and unique. Our vision is for them to feel connected and develop a strong relationship to themselves AND be inspired and empowered by the power and possibilities of their own wellbeing, resilience and potential. They are our future artists, innovators, leaders, parents, etc.

The beauty of It’s Good To Be Me is that we KNOW that no child is broken or needs to be ‘fixed’. We always focus on the highest potential of the individuals we work with. We create the space for them to tap into their highest potential that we know is within. From our experience, when children know that they have someone who believes in them and supports their passions and dreams they are more likely to thrive.

We look forward to connecting with you as we continue on this journey.

Much love.
